What is a MAC Address?

Here are some OUI of well known manufacturers :. The rightmost six digits represents Network Interface Controller , which is assigned by manufacturer.

Step 2: Identify the Chip

But this is just a conversion, not mandatory. Multicast — Multicast address allow the source to send a frame to group of devices.

Now the system will be identified through MAC address. When the device get disconnected, it looses the IP address.

The rightmost digits of a MAC address represent an identification number for the specific device S. Among all devices manufactured with the same vendor prefix, each is given their own unique bit number.

Note that hardware from different vendors may happen to share the same device portion of the address. While traditional MAC addresses are all 48 bits in length, a few types of networks require bit addresses instead. Instead of bit hardware addresses, though, IPv6 automatically translates bit MAC address to a bit address by inserting a fixed hardcoded bit value FFFE in between the vendor prefix and the device identifier. IPv6 calls these numbers identifiers to distinguish them from true bit hardware addresses.
